Beginning in 2010, the so-called “Baby Boomer” generation will begin to reach retirement age. Never before have policy makers found themselves with such a disproportionately large group of older adults. The Texas Department on Aging (TDoA) commissioned the University of North Texas Survey Research Center (UNT-SRC) to assess housing for older Texans in order to understand the impact of this demographic shift on housing and its implications for public policy. UNT-SRC hired Tekoa Housing Advisors to synthesize data from 11 focus groups, discussions with industry experts, and 2,000 telephone interviews in order to highlight the primary housing needs of older Texans and to help TDoA, the Texas Legislature, advocates and others shape policies, set priorities and allocate resources for older Texans.
