Located
in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, Las Canteras Apartments will provide
100 new affordable townhomes for families earning less than 60 percent of
area median income, $27,459 in 2004. All residents can
enjoy a pool, playground, and community center where educational classes and
other supportive services will be offered by the Pharr Housing Authority.
The site on East Thomas Road is in Las Milpas, one of Pharr's fastest growing
areas. Las Canteras is adjacent to an elementary school, and within a few
miles of essential services, such as a grocery store, free medical clinic,
retail stores and a police and fire substation. The project owner is Pharr
Housing Development Corporation, an affiliate of the Pharr Housing Authority,
and 40 of the units will replace demolished public housing units. Construction
is to begin Summer 2005.
